The appeal of systems you can actually see
Most of life's systems are invisible. Traffic, supply chains, the economy - they affect you constantly, but you never see the gears. Factory games flip that. Everything is laid out in front of you. Cause and effect are immediate and visual. You put a pipe here, a junction there, pull the lever - and something either works or it doesn't.
There's a real satisfaction in that legibility. You're not guessing. You're reading a system you built yourself.
Why breaking down is part of the fun
A factory that never fails isn't interesting. It's a screensaver.
The best factory games introduce friction - parts that wear out, seals that spring leaks, bottlenecks that only appear under load. You build something, it works, then it quietly starts to degrade. And now you've got a new problem to solve.
Fair enough if that sounds stressful. But it's the same reason people do crosswords or sudoku. The puzzle needs to push back. Without resistance, there's no satisfaction in solving it.
The maintenance loop - that rhythm of build, run, repair, improve - is what keeps factory games compelling long after the initial novelty wears off. You're never quite done. And that's the point.
The procrastination trap
You know how it goes. Something in the system needs fixing, but it's not urgent yet. You'll sort it next shift. Maybe the one after that.
Then a seal goes, paint bleeds across the floor, and suddenly you're losing money you didn't have to lose. Factory games are almost cruel in the way they punish that particular habit. They're a little mirror held up to a very human tendency to put things off until they become emergencies.
It's not a lecture, though. It's just consequence, built into the mechanics. Which is arguably a more honest way to teach a lesson than any productivity article ever written.
Colour as a factory output
Most factory games deal in abstract resources - ore, energy, widgets. What's interesting about building a paint-mixing works specifically is that the output is colour, which is anything but abstract. You can see immediately whether you got it right.
Mix red and yellow and you get orange. Add a bit more red and it shifts warmer. That's not a game mechanic you have to learn - it's something you already know, even if you've never thought about it formally. The challenge is in the precision. Getting close to a colour is easy. Getting it exactly right - the right proportions, routed through the right pipework, without contaminating another stream - that's where the puzzle lives.
It's also, as it turns out, harder than it looks. Colour mixing is one of those things you think you understand until you actually try it. Proportional mixing especially. Two parts red to one part yellow isn't orange - it's a deeper, warmer shade that sits somewhere between orange and red. Getting your head around that spatially, through pipework you've physically routed, is a genuinely different experience from reading about it.

Small scale. High stakes.
There's one more thing that makes factory games work: the stakes feel real, even though they're tiny.
A missed deadline on a rush order. A dodgy seal that's been leaking for two shifts. Running out of blue paint right before a big job. None of it matters in any real sense. But in the moment, it absolutely does.
That's the trick. Good factory games make you care about a system that exists only on your screen. And when that system finally hums - when the orders go out on time, the maintenance is done, the coins are coming in - it feels genuinely earned.
Even if you did put off fixing that seal for just a bit too long.
