Picture a reception classroom, sometime in the 1980s. Stubby brushes, pots of red, yellow and blue paint, and a teacher demonstrating something that felt almost like magic: two colours going in, a completely different one coming out. Children genuinely gasped. It was science, art and a little bit of alchemy all at once.

That moment - the gasp - is harder to engineer now. Not because children are less curious, but because the lesson that produced it has largely vanished from classrooms. Colour mixing, once a reliable staple of early arts education, has been quietly squeezed out. And it's worth asking why.

What happened to the paint pots?

The short answer is that curriculum pressure happened. As schools were asked to demonstrate measurable outcomes in literacy and numeracy, the open-ended, exploratory parts of the school day shrank. Art didn't disappear, but it became more project-led - make a card, decorate a display, produce something for the wall - and less process-led. You don't need to understand how orange happens if you can just squeeze it straight from a pre-mixed tube.

Digital tools accelerated this. When a colour picker gives you any shade imaginable with a single click, the mechanical question of how you'd build that colour from scratch stops feeling relevant. Why muddle about with primaries when the answer is already there, waiting to be selected?

Right, but here's the thing: the how is exactly the part that builds understanding. Clicking a colour picker teaches you nothing about why mixing red and blue doesn't quite give you a clean purple, or why adding white doesn't simply make a colour lighter in the way you'd expect. Those surprises - the ones that only show up when you're actually doing it - are where the real learning lives.

The gap between imagining a colour and making one

People often learn the hard way that colour mixing in practice bears almost no resemblance to colour mixing in theory. You picture a rich terracotta in your head, you add red to orange, and you get something that looks like dried mud. The mental model and the physical reality are genuinely different things, and no amount of thinking about it bridges that gap - only doing it does.

We've written before about why mixing paint feels so different from mixing paint in your head, and the core of it is this: colour perception is relative, not absolute. Your brain adjusts on the fly. The colour you imagine exists in isolation; the colour you mix exists next to everything else on the palette. Those are two completely different problems.

Early hands-on mixing education was, arguably without anyone naming it as such, training children to think about colour relationally. That's a genuinely useful cognitive skill. And we let it go.

Does any of this matter outside an art room?

Probably more than it seems. Colour literacy - a working intuition for how colours relate, mix and interact - turns up in graphic design, interior decoration, fashion, photography, cooking presentation, and dozens of other places where most people operate purely on gut feeling because they never built the underlying framework.

Graphic designers will tell you that clients who have no colour intuition are the hardest to work with, not because they have bad taste, but because they can't describe what they want in any terms that translate to the screen. They know they don't like it; they can't say why or what would fix it. That's the gap left by skipping the paint pots.

There's also something to be said for the simple satisfaction of it. Mixing colours from primaries is one of those activities that rewards attention in a very immediate, tangible way. You try something, you see what happens, you adjust. The feedback loop is instant and physical. That's rarer than it should be.

Games as an unexpected classroom

It's a little ironic that some of the most engaged colour-mixing education happening right now is inside games. We built Kalabux partly around this idea - pipe red, yellow and blue paint through a hex grid of steampunk plumbing, watch the streams meet at junctions, and fill customer orders with the exact shade they've asked for. Two parts red to one part yellow. All three primaries in equal measure for brown. Proportional mixes for in-between shades.

It's a puzzle game, not a classroom, and we're not pretending otherwise. But the number of people who've said it made them think differently about colour - that they finally felt why orange is closer to red than to yellow - is genuinely gratifying. The hands-on element matters even when the hands are virtual.

There's a broader point in there about the intuitive colour knowledge most of us already carry without realising it. Games that make that knowledge explicit, that give it a structure to snap into, are doing something useful even when they're just being fun.

Can the gasp come back?

There are signs that hands-on colour education is being reconsidered, at least in some places. The maker movement brought mixing and materials back into schools through a different door. Science lessons occasionally rediscover it. And there's a growing awareness that process-led learning - doing things to find out what happens, rather than to produce a predetermined output - develops a kind of flexible thinking that's hard to teach any other way.

But it's slow. The curriculum is crowded, and paint pots are messy and time-consuming in ways that digital tools are not. The path of least resistance is still the colour picker.

Which is a shame. Because the gasp, when it comes, is worth the mess.
